Bosch ROS20VSC Palm Sander Review

bosch

The ROS20VSC random orbit sander by Bosch also works as a metal polisher and comes loaded with some nice features including a variable speed setting. Unlike single-speed models, this power tool can increase or reduce its speed based on the application. Whether you want to learn how to sand furniture or refinish the kitchen counters, this is one tough model you can really rely on.

Our Verdict: This power tool is perfect for medium to large-sized jobs in your home or woodworking shop. The variable speed setting definitely adds to its versatility and allows you to take on any type of project around the home. The included dust system is a great feature, but only if you use the shop vac adapter. Overall, I found that this power tool offered a solid performance and would be a great buy for the beginner, DIYer, or pro woodworker.

Read on to learn how versatile this sander really is, how it stands up to the competition and why it’s a sander I feel you can really rely on.

Overview and Features

If you’re familiar with the manufacturer, then you know they have a reputation for producing top of the line power tools at prices that are reasonable. Their extensive line of random orbit sanders are best-sellers,  mainly because they’re both powerful and reliable. This model, in particular, features the type of ergonomic design that will allow you to use this tool comfortably, for several hours at a time. Its lightweight design also makes it perfect for challenging vertical jobs or overhead work. But does this model really offer the type of performance the manufacturer claims it does? Is it really built with user comfort in mind?

Bosch ROS20VSC Palm Sander

Product Rating: (4.5/5)

bosch

  • Ergonomic handle
  • Dust collection system
  • Variable speed settings
  • Lightweight design
  • Pad dampening system
  • Shop vac adapter

If you’ve ever used a low-quality sander, then you know how much they tend to vibrate during operation, which can be painful for the user while also making the sander difficult to control. This model provides a totally different user experience. It’s variable speed output of 7,500 to 12,000 OPM also means this model can be used for a wide variety of applications. It’s also a corded model, which means you can use it for as long as you need, without worrying about draining the battery.

Variable Speed Dial

Many models in this price range are single speed, so I was pleasantly surprised to learn that this is a variable speed sander.

You’ll find the variable speed dial conveniently located, allowing you to make changes to the speed settings quickly. However, because the dial is out in the open, it’s also possible to accidentally bump it. Because of this, your hand placement will be critical.

Attachment System

This model also features the popular loop and hook disc attachment system, which will secure your sanding materials in place. Unfortunately, sawdust tends to get under the papers and into the loops and hooks. If you don’t remember to blow out the debris then the crushed powder will make it impossible for the sandpaper to stay in place during operation.

Dust Collection System

The dust collection system utilizes microfiltration technology to ensure that any dust particles are trapped inside the attached dust canister. This system is able to capture particles that measure in as small as half a micron, which is pretty impressive. The included canister is compact and durable, however, you’ll need to be extra careful when removing the lid in order to prevent powder and dust from flying everywhere.

Handgrip

The ergonomically designed handgrip helps to improve your control during operation and keeps your hand comfortable. The grip is large enough to accommodate a two-handed grip for those rough sanding projects.

Pad Dampening

The pad dampening system is designed to minimize rounded swirl marks in the wood.

Advantages and Disadvantages

bosch

Pros

  • Ergonomic handle
  • Dust collection system
  • Variable speed settings
  • Lightweight design
  • Pad dampening system
  • Shop vac adapter

Cons

  • Sawdust can get trapped under the sandpaper if you don’t clean out any built-up power during use.

Performance

This is a powerful little power tool, complete with variable speed controls, a built-in dust collection system, and an ergonomic grip that promotes user comfort. If you’re not happy with the dust collection canister, the manufacturer has also included a shop vac adapter for more efficient clean up.

How it Measures Up to the Competition

The Hutchins 4500 6-Inch DA Super Sander is a competing model that offers a powerful motor, comfortable grip and a vibration-free motor design that promotes longer use. It’s equipped with an air efficiency system which means you’ll have to hook it up to an air compressor to use, a downside for any potential buyer on a budget. However, unlike this model, it’s considered pro-grade, which means it will fit in nicely in an automotive shop or a woodworking shop. I’d recommend this model for large jobs around the home such as refinishing hardwood floors. This Bosch model is a better fit for home use, although it too can handle some bigger jobs, it simply can’t compete with the Hutchins model in terms of power. However, if you’re on a tight budget, this Bosch model is the way to go.
